This species was found by Gustave Wallis, who was born in Lüneburg in 1830 and had his horticultural education in Detmold/Germany. He worked from 1858 for the company Linden in Belgium, which sent him to Brazil to collect orchids. There he completed one of the longest collecting journeys ever, crossing all of South America from the source of the Amazon to its mouth.
In 1870 he traveled to the Philippines for Veitch & Sons, in 1872 already again for Linden to Colombia, where he discovered Anthurium crystallinum. Subsequently, he went up north to Panama, then south again to Ecuador, where he died of fever in a hospital in Cuenca in 1878.
