hellwigianum = Dr. Franz Carl Hellwig, *1861 in Danzig , †1889 in Papua New Guinea, botanist and physician in German New Guinea, not to be confused with Franz Emil Hellwig (* 1854 in Halle (Saale); † 1929 ibid.), a German merchant who conducted research as an ethnographer while in German New Guinea (DNG).

Dendrobium hellwigianum is widely distributed at high altitudes in PNG. The natural diversity in the coloration of the flowers ranges from pale pink to dark red to blue-violet. The offspring offered here has a particularly intensely colored parent with Den. hellwigianum "Warren".
