andreettae = Angel Andreetta (1920 - 2011), Italian clergyman, came to Ecuador as a missionary in 1939 and to many parts of the country during the missionary work that lasted more than 30 years, collected numerous orchids with Carlyle August Luer, among others. Besides numerous species, the genus Andreettaea Luer was founded in his honour in 1978 (Orchidaceae). He also laid the foundation for numerous nurseries in Ecuador, including Ecuagenera.

Sudamerlycaste andreettae sprouts the flower stems at the same time as the new shoot appears. The inflorescence stems can grow to 20-25cm long and bear a terminal, overhanging, waxy flower that is only very faintly fragrant.
