Phragmipedium schlimii var. fischeri, (Braem & Mohr) Gruss
fischeri = Jerry FISCHER, owner of the American orchid nursery Orchids Ltd, imported a large quantity of Phragmipedium schlimii from Ecuador. Already when receiving the plants, some of them attracted attention because of their different growth compared to Phragmipedium schlimii. When one of the imported plants flowered for the first time, he immediately realised that this could not be Phragmipedium schlimii and sent material for a description of the new species to Germany.
|Trade name:||south American slipper orchid|
Phragmipedium fischeri grows lithophytically and terrestrially along small streams and rivers and on steep rock faces at 1000-1500m altitude. The cool to warm temperate sites are bright without direct sunlight.
Phragmipedium fischeri is considered slow growing in cultivation. The plants are among the smallest in the genus Phragmipedium, a leaf span over 20cm is very rare.
